What to Do If Your Hair Is Dry

Step 1: Assess the Cause
Dry hair often results from external factors like heat styling, over-washing, sun exposure, or chemical treatments. Internal issues like poor diet or certain health conditions can also play a role. Identifying the likely cause will help guide the right treatment approach.
Step 2: Switch to a Moisturising Shampoo and Conditioner
Use sulphate-free, hydrating shampoos and conditioners specifically formulated for dry or damaged hair. Avoid products with harsh detergents that strip natural oils. Look for ingredients like argan oil, shea butter, or glycerin.
Step 3: Reduce Washing Frequency
Washing your hair too often can remove essential oils. Try washing every 2–3 days, or even less frequently if possible. Between washes, use dry shampoo to absorb excess oil without drying out the hair shaft.
Step 4: Avoid Heat Styling When Possible
Limit the use of hairdryers, straighteners, and curling irons. If you must use heat, apply a heat protectant spray and use the lowest effective temperature setting.
Step 5: Try Deep Conditioning and Hair Masks
Use a deep conditioning treatment or hair mask once a week. These products penetrate the hair shaft to provide long-lasting moisture. You can also try natural treatments like coconut oil, avocado, or honey masks.
Step 6: Protect Hair from Environmental Damage
Wear a hat in the sun, protect your hair from chlorine when swimming (using a cap or leave-in conditioner), and avoid prolonged exposure to wind and cold without covering your head.
Step 7: Trim Regularly
Dry hair often leads to split ends. Regular trims every 6–8 weeks can prevent further damage and keep your hair looking healthy.
Step 8: Improve Your Diet
Ensure you’re getting enough essential fatty acids, vitamins (like B vitamins and biotin), and hydration. Foods like salmon, nuts, eggs, and leafy greens support hair health from the inside out.
